I was thinking today... Has Sands always been the way he is now? Maybe but maybe not. I think it's possible that once he had family: wife, maybe a child but lost them. Now he is a man that has nothing more to lose and play this psychotic game. Maybe that's why he said to El that he chose him because El, in his opinion, has nothing to live for since he had lost his family.
What do you think?

Hmm...well, I definitely don't think he's always been the cold hearted sociopath we've all come to know and love. People like that are created (usually through tramatic experiences or a neglectful childhood to name a few examples), not born. When you're born and when you're a kid, you're innocent, untainted. The things that happen during your life are what make you who you are. As for your theory about him having a wife and kid...it sounds pretty good. There's currently a story on FanFiction.net called Blood in the Sand that's kinda going in that direction. It takes place directly after Sands loses his eyes, but it has brief flashes of his past. In it, he had a lover who he thought had died three years ago along with their unborn child. Only thing is, his girl is alive as well as his daughter. ^.^ It's a very sweet story; I recommend it. I'm also very intrigued about the idea of Sands chosing El because of his past--he was basing it on his own history, so he could at least relate to El on that. All in all, neat idea! Anybody out there up to trying it out as a fic? (looks hopeful)  ~Sid |

I have read that fic and I really liked it, which really means something because normally the only fic I like about Sands are the action ones, no romance involved.
I don't think I'm going to write a fic, at least, not any time soon....

you guys think he had a wife and kid? See, that doesnt strike me as sands. I think that he took his job VERY seriously since the beginning. In school he was probably a trouble maker maybe, or a book worm. I mean, its hard to tell. He's tough, but he's extremely smart. Im sure he's had a healthy share of ladies (i think we can agree with that), but i dont think he was married.

I'm not so sure about him having a family (I see him as a bit of a loner, really), but the idea is rather intriuging and I'd love to see someone take it on. But your theory about Sands is interesting as well. Makes me think of how I portrayed him in my fics, especially the pre-Mexico one. He's smart and gets good grades, but he's still a smart ass towards his nonexistant peers and teachers he loathes. And as for a healthy share of female callers... most definitely ;D

I'm new. I really really really love Sands, and because of this I have wondered about what made him what he is now. What sort of awful event could have caused this change in the human nature? I have read a WHOLE lot of OUATIM fanfics and the one that seems to have a good guess on a traumatising event that could have caused his insanity is: Que Quieres En La Vida. It is a story written by an amazing fanfiction authoress caled Miss Becky. She has written many OUATIM fics. She is the best. I really cannot see Sands playing with his daughter on a Sunday morning and the turning round and kissing his wife on the cheek.. but maybe he went through some major changes to become the Sands he is now?

You know people you all say that he became THE Sands because his life was tragic tragis tragic. I guess not. Maybe it wasn't that tragic after all. Maybe it was crazy and unusual from the beginning. You know what? I think he was a book worm but he always got himself into troubles or was taken into them. And when he grew up all he wanted was to make trouble and make everyone around get into HIS so called troubles. Anyway I don't imagine him having a wife and a child. It's just not him. He wouldn't act like that if he once loved and was happy.

I think he is a charming sociopath. I don't think he was born one... but he certainly became one. A sociopath thinks of nothing outside of his own needs. He relates to people only in so far as how that person can meet his needs.
Because he is also charming, he's good at getting people to do what he wants... he sets them up and watches them fall.
In other words, he is a user. I don't think he would have a loving wify and kiddies anywhere. Unless he needed them for something. Then he would drop them once the need was over.
There is nothing in canon, as far as I can see, to indicate otherwise.
